Set within the Surrey countryside, The Clock House is the sensitive restoration of an eighteenth-century carriage house, reimagined by NK Living as a warm and characterful family home. Originally dating back to the 1770s and once part of the Garston Park carriage house, the property has been carefully restored to honour its architectural heritage while introducing the comfort and functionality required for modern family life.

Purchased by owners with a deep appreciation for historic buildings, The Clock House was a true labour of love. The two-and-a-half-year restoration involved significant structural work, including lowering the existing mezzanine level, installing new floors, creating a striking new staircase and integrating underfloor heating, air conditioning and modern electrical systems throughout.

Working closely with the client, NK Living developed an interior-led approach that balanced the practical needs of contemporary living with the building’s original character. Exposed beams, original stone walls and period detailing were carefully preserved, while new materials were introduced to bring warmth, continuity and everyday comfort to the home.

Following a visit to Havwoods’ Clerkenwell showroom, the client selected Bergen from the Henley Collection, a rich European oak flooring from Havwoods’ Auburn colour group. Chosen for its depth of colour and naturally rustic appearance, Bergen sits comfortably alongside the property’s historic materials, complementing the exposed timber beams and restored stonework.

Beyond the limestone entrance hall, Bergen flows throughout almost every room, helping to connect the different areas of the home. Its warm tone and natural grain provide a consistent backdrop for family life, while allowing the building’s original architectural features to remain the focus.

More than a renovation, The Clock House demonstrates how heritage properties can be updated without losing the qualities that make them unique. From the restoration of the original clock to the specification of timber flooring throughout the interiors, every element reflects an approach rooted in craftsmanship, respect for history and long-term family living.

The completed home feels calm, warm and deeply connected to its past, showing that the most successful restorations do not erase original character, but build thoughtfully upon it.
