Here Callum Gouldbourne, Project Manager at Haddonstone, one of the UK’s leading architectural cast stone manufacturers, gives an insight into his progression from the factory floor to “a diverse client-facing role” as Project Manager.”

How long have you worked at Haddonstone?

I have been working here at Haddonstone for four years at the stunning Grade II listed head office, manufactory and show gardens in Northamptonshire.  I started in the factory operative in the semi-dry cast department, packing the stone for 18 months.  I then had the best training as an Assistant Project Manager which prepared me very well for my role of Project Manager today.

How do you describe what you do as a Project Manager?

My role is so diverse! I do everything that comes with managing contracts, from quoting, drawing, processing orders, and site visits. I am also responsible for after-care/sales. Haddonstone provides many of the country’s luxury housing developers and most discerning private clients with the highest quality architectural and ornamental cast stone products and my job is to make sure they are all served in the most professional manner.

What first attracted you to the job?

I always relish the opportunity to learn new skills and progress accordingly.  The Project Manager role develops with me; every day is a new, learning day.

What is your favourite part of your role?

I love the diversity and freshness! No two projects are the same and no two days are the same!

Do you work with clients directly on projects?

Each project is different. On most, we meet and discuss the client’s vision which I enjoy. However, the final decisions are mostly collaborative with architects, engineers and specifiers.

What type of projects are you involved with?

I work on a large range of projects - from landscaping and small extensions to large bespoke dwellings and multi-plot developments.

Can you describe the projects process?

Again, every project is different. Some customers will come to us looking for inspiration while others will have a clear vision in mind. It is common that a client has discussed the project beforehand with an architect, and we are then presented with drawings. This is where we go through the designs and help with making their vision a reality.

How do you handle challenges in the design or installation process?

Challenges are a part of life! It is rare that we don’t have to suggest ways of getting around design limitations whilst still maintaining the overall aesthetic of the build. It is an interesting part of the job.

How much of your work is “on site”?

Most of my work is carried out in the office. However, site visits are a regular occurrence and it’s always good to meet clients face to face.

What other stakeholders do you work with and how - architects,/ designers/ developers/ installers

We work with all the above, of course, depending on the structure of the project.  Much of the time, contractors, architects and engineers are employed by the client, and we talk to them all.
