Tried and tested barrier products from the FIREFLY® range were employed by a long-term member of  the manufacturer’s established installer network during the run-up to Christmas, in order to upgrade the roof-space of a two-storey residential building in Sheerness belonging to the Southern Housing Group.

The four flats on Richmond Street, dating from the 1960s are traditionally built and in a good state of repair, but the design of the roof-space was deemed not to fully comply with current Building Regulation requirements, prompting the social housing landlord to bring in Bracknell based PiLON - as a specialist contractor with a large number of its operatives who have undergone the FIREFLY® training courses on an annual basis.

The site manager for PiLON, Gabriel Predescu, commented: “As a multi-disciplinary, principal contractor, we specialise in the maintenance and refurbishment of assets owned and managed by social housing providers and in this instance, we were instructed by the client on the back of a routine risk assessment. Southern makes extensive use of the FIREFLY® range across its stock while we have installed the Zeus and other barrier products on multiple projects in the past. We had half a dozen operatives on site over a five-week period running during November and December last year."

"A total of some 95 square metres of the Zeus membrane was installed within the roof voids using the company’s high temperature adhesive and staples, along with Collaroll to provide protected zones, effectively creating compartmentation between the two upper storey, two-bedroom flats.  Although we know we can always call on FIREFLY® to provide site specific details on any of our contracts, this was a relatively straightforward installation and we were confident in using our experience to carry out the work.”

Manufactured from woven and non-woven glass, the FIREFLY® range is designed to optimise resistance to flame and smoke, as well as offer heat protection in a wide range of scenarios.  The barriers are easy to install horizontally or vertically using a full selection of FIREFLY® ancillary products in order to ensure a fully tested and certified installed system. FIREFLY® Zeus Lite Vertical 90:30 is a lightweight non-rigid fire barrier designed to provide fire compartmentation of larger concealed spaces and voids within buildings, offering 90 minutes integrity and 30 minutes Insulation.  It has been specifically designed and tested for vertical applications.  www.tbafirefly.com
