A fully compatible selection of FIREFLY® barrier products was employed by a member of its trusted installer network, to protect an oil tank situated alongside one of the warehouses within the London Gateway port on the River Thames during a rapid, nine-day contract successfully carried out just prior to Christmas.

Industrial warehouse with rows of red, blue, and white oil drums, some labeled Total, and a worker in orange high-vis.

The work at the internationally important container terminal was carried out on behalf of DP by Midlands-based Krasi Fire Protection, a FIREFLY® Preferred Installer, in consultation with the FIREFLY® Technical Team: creating a high-level vertical barrier 25 metres long with a four-metre drop. Krasi ensures all its installers undertake FIREFLY® training courses on an annual basis, with four operatives being involved on this latest job near Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. Working from a cherry picker type hydraulic platform, the team installed FIREFLY® Apollo Lite 30:30 in combination with the manufacturer’s Penowrap, FB180 batts and other ancillary materials.

Krasi Fire Protection’s founder and Managing Director, Krasimir Mitev, commented: “This is the latest in a number of projects we have undertaken for DP World at London Gateway, with the client actually specifying the use of the FIREFLY® systems on the basis of their past effectiveness and the products’ certifications. We worked from the cherry picker while using a ‘mule’ to facilitate the positioning of the barrier materials, making very good progress: beginning the work in December 2025 and finishing ahead of schedule on the 9th."

"In addition to following the FIREFLY® frame detail, we utilised Penowrap to protect the purlins and the FB180 batts around the multiple service penetrations. Together, the products create a separation wall to protect the main building against the possibility of a fire starting in the large oil tank. Overall, it has been a very successful outcome.”

The Technical Manager for FIREFLY®, Chris Boam added: “Krasi Fire Protection was seeking to provide compartmentation within a specific area of the building and engaged with our Technical Team during the installation process to review the proposed approach. The project included a number of existing site constraints and service penetrations, so early technical involvement helped ensure the works were aligned as closely as possible with the relevant FIREFLY® guidance and available tested details."

"Krasi has a strong understanding of FIREFLY®systems, with its installers undertaking regular Firefly training and the overall solution was very positive given the scale of the barrier, the restricted working conditions and the need to coordinate around existing services. We offer site support for our customers wherever they encounter new or unusual project-specific challenges.”

Manufactured from woven and non-woven glass, the FIREFLY® range is designed to optimise resistance to flame and smoke as well as offer heat protection in a wide range of scenarios. The barriers are easy to install horizontally or vertically, using a full selection of FIREFLY® ancillary products to ensure a fully tested and certified installed system.
