Chic, Bespoke Security Shutters For Two Prime Residential Homes

When a top development location became available in the leafy suburbs of a prime area in the South  of England, it was ideal for a successful businessman to build two homes for family members. As the slightly remote location could cause the properties to be vulnerable when the homes were  unoccupied, the family sought a chic solution for physical security that would harmonise with the  character of the architecture but give complete peace of mind.  They quickly chose Equilux security shutters for their ability to be completely hidden within the fabric of the building when open, and appropriately elegant, but secure, when closed.

Designing for Super-sized Glazed Areas

Many of the windows and doors had superior sizes with vast areas of glazing to make the most of the spectacular views, and some corner glazed windows opening out onto balconies. One spectacular  feature in both houses was a 6m high window flooding light into the stairwell and spanning all levels  of the property. By involving the technical design team at Charter Global at the early stages of the build, the developer was able to integrate lintel shutter solutions into the plan, where the shutter curtain rolls  into the cavity of a lintel casing, which is then hidden by the plasterwork of the building.

Collaborative working, right from the start

Charter Global's designers were able to produce detailed working drawings, bearing in mind unique requirements for loads imposed on the lintels from the blockwork and brickwork, and full wiring schedules to show the connection of individual control pads in each room that also connect to a whole-house  management system and tablet screen controllers.  The unique stairwell windows are protected by one impressive Equilux shutter that spans the complete glazed area, and a smart solution was designed for the corner-glazed balcony areas in the  bedrooms, incorporating a mirrored central post to house the guide profiles. Some shutters also have built-in perforated sections to allow light to percolate through.

Innovative Vertical Rise Shutters

The top floor of one of the homes has an extensive chill-out area with a bar, pool table and big screen for gaming. Although the windows are smaller, being at the top of the house meant that there was no head room for the shutter hood box, so a traditional top-rolling shutter was not possible.  However, Charter Global was able to install it's remarkable ‘vertical-rise’ shutter that rolls from the window-sill  upwards.

By positioning the hidden hood box at the bottom of the window aperture and boxing it in,  this system gives a rather unusual, but absolutely ideal solution. As the Equilux shutters were connected to the BMS of the house, this gives the ability to close all shutters on a house at the touch of a button, and the light sensors built into the side profiles ensures  that if an object is blocking the travel of the shutter, that specific shutter would automatically stop, to make sure nothing is damaged.
