Beachfront Home On The Sussex Coast Gets Stunning Makeover

Set directly on the shoreline at Pevensey Bay, this beachfront home has been completely remodelled and reimagined to make the most of its coastal setting. The brief was clear: transform an existing property into a contemporary, light-filled home with uninterrupted views of the sea and a seamless connection between inside and out – all just a stone’s throw from the sea.

Complete modernisation and update
Designed by Meloy Architecture and Design, the renovation stripped the house back and added first floor accommodation. By moving the master-bedroom to the new upper floor space was created to reconfigure the reconfigured ground floor layout to create a generous open-plan living space. Living, dining and kitchen spaces now flow effortlessly towards the beach, with large openings framing the ever-changing views of the coast. Externally, timber cladding was included in the design to give the home a warm, modern appearance while still fitting in with neighbouring beach homes. The natural look of the of the wooden boards complement the coastal surroundings as well as contrasting perfectly with the slim aluminium frames of the glazing.

Maximising the view with theEDGE2.0
Given the location right on the shingle bank overlooking the beach, the glazing specification was critical. The homeowners wanted minimal visual interruption, high performance and doors that could withstand the demands of such an exposed location. The owners opted for theEDGE2.0 sliding door system for its clean, contemporary aesthetic that suits the modern look of the reimagined house, whilst the ultra-slim aluminium frames allow for maximum glass area. The doors also benefit from excellent thermal performance and weather resistance to keep out wind and rain. On the ground floor three sets of sliding doors span the full width of the rear elevation, opening the home directly onto the decking and beach beyond. When closed, the large amounts of glass and minimal frame allow almost uninterrupted views out to sea, whilst when open, the boundary between inside and out virtually disappears.

Living with the landscape
Inside, the impact of the renovation and the glazing design is immediate. Where once you were met with corridors and smaller rooms now entering from the front door you are met with natural light that floods deep into the home throughout the day. The open-plan space enables views through the house towards the beach whilst cleverly placed clerestory windows set back from the rear elevation help to pull light deeper into the existing structure. Views of the beach and sea become a constant part of everyday living – whether relaxing in the lounge, cooking in the kitchen or using the living space to entertain guests. Upstairs, a fourth set of doors, complete with frameless glass balustrade acting as a Juliet balcony, continues the theme of maximising light and views, ensuring the coastal setting is experienced throughout the property.

A challenging installation made easy
For the IDSystems team installing the glazing on the south-facing elevation with limited access took some careful planning. The location of the house on the shingle bank means access from the rear is at a lower level than the main structure of the house – requiring a crane to be able to lift the glass up and over the house. This required careful coordination and a narrow window of suitable weather conditions – but fortunately the wind and rain held off and the installation went completely to plan in near perfect conditions.
A seamless finished result
This Pevensey Bay renovation is a clear example of how high-performance glazing can redefine the connection between a home and its surroundings. By combining sensitive design, contemporary building methods and IDSystems’ theEDGE2.0 sliding doors, the project delivers a stylish and relaxed coastal home that feels open, light and completely connected to its surroundings. www.idsystems.co.uk
